Can someone recommend a good backyard bird identification book for southern Indiana? My mom has mentioned wanting a bird id book several times; so I thought it might make a good mother's day gift. She has many bird feeders and would like something with good pictures. She's not going hiking in the woods to watch birds so something for just the backyard bird feeder would do nicely. Any help is really appreciated, thanks!

Backyard birds? I have decided to try and get into some backyard bird watching/feeding. I have been searching for a good book online, and am having difficulty in telling if it is what I am looking for. Anyone know of a good book that will explain about types of birdhouses, feeding/feeders, things that go along with all of that, and possibly (hopefully) including some kind of a guide to help you identify the backyard birds in your yard?
What is the best flowers to bring in butterflies? backyard bird watching, would like to add butterflies.

A bird in backyard, what I can do? I just noticed that there is a bird in my backyard everyday. I took some time to watch it, then I found that the bird is hurt. it can not fly any more, one leg was broken since it only uses one leg jumping. My backyard has trees, grasses, so it should be fine for it. what else I should do? I do not want to disturb its life, but want to keep it stay too. thanks
Best Bird Watching publication or magazine "N.E.Ohio"? I'm a backyard birdwatcher in Northeastern Ohio. Are there any good publications that focuses on this (N.E. Ohio) part of the country?
Just found owl eggs and the dead mother how do i hatch the eggs and care for the babies? I went out to go bird-watching in my backyard and saw a dead owl. I buried it, and then i found six owl eggs(I know they are owl eggs because there was a baby owl on the floor next to them). Could anyone tell me or give me a website that will tell me how to hatch the owl eggs and how to care for the hatched owlet? Please help, i can't find any info on this anywhere.
What can I do to attract birds & butterflies? I enjoy sitting in my backyard & I love watching birds & butterflies. Is there something that I could put out there to attract more of them? Especially cardinals.
what binoculars? I was curious to hear some advice about what type of binoculars I should look into. My family is starting backyard bird watching, so it would be used to watch them up closer, and possibly just around the neighborhood. We shouldn't be doing any major adventuristic type of activities such as hiking or whatnot. I noticed the most common is around 8x25, but was worred the 8 magnification would be too much for just our small back yard...should I look at more of a 4x? Also for the second number (what ever it is called), should I stick with one around 25...or would a higher field view be better for my purpose? Remember, it is just for our backyard viewing, and maybe in the neighborhood when I take the girls to the park...things like that. Thanks in advance!
I found a dead bird in a flower pot in my backyard where i planted seeds to represent my relationship-HELP!!!? I planted Basil seeds on the night of The Spring Equinox, to represent the fertility of my current relationship of 3 yrs. I chose basil, believing it represents fertility and money. I planted the seeds with the intention of nuturing it, and watching it grow. I FOUND A DEAD BABY BIRD inside the pot, which was full of mud (it was outside in my backyard) surprisingly, THE BASIL HAD STARTED TO GROW! I wonder if the body of dead animals (birds) help plant growth? But I also FELT VERY WEIRD about this, like what is the meaning behind this? You see I purposely positioned this flower pot outside, in the corner of my yard to allow the seeds to receive the most possible sunlight. There is a tall tree above this area (but I wasn't thinking about a bird "falling" into my pot!! When I found the bird, I looked up, & did not see a nest. Could he have landed, and "fell in"? He was a baby bird. I WOKE UP @ 2:30AM SEARCHING THE NET FOR ANSWERS! PLEASE HELP WITH SERIOUS ANSWERS!! THANKS SO MUCH! (PEACE)
Will birds come if the birds feeder is too close to the house? My Mom has End Stage A lzheimer's and receives Hospice Care at home. She loves lookng out her window which faces thr backyard. My sister put a Bird feeder outside her bedroom window so she can enjoy bird watches; she loves birds. If the birdfeeder is too close to her window will the still come?
Are you jealous of a bird's ability to fly? I am... everytime I watch them in my backyard, I'm amazed by them. They can go wherever they want, at any time, and not restricted to one place. It somehow makes me feel free to watch the birds be free. They can just escape whenever they want at anytime, and no one can catch them. Anyone esle feel this way about birds?
Can a 6 year old cockatiel that hasn't been around other tiels, adjust to life with other tiels? Is it possible she might bond with them and maybe even find a mate? She calls out to my backyard birds sometimes and seems interested in watching them.
I need help with lots of bird questions!? Put 1 and 2 for I know what question your anwsering. 1. Should I give birds a water bath? 2. How many bird feeders should I put up? 3. How many bird houses should I put up? 4. How many bird baths should I put up? 5. Do you think I'll get an owl in my backyard? 6. Is it fun to watch birds? (I think so!) 7. Abandoned Bird Nest, How Can I Help? I noticed a birds nest being built in my backyard for several weeks. The mother would sit there for a couple weeks,a nd i had checked to see if eggs were in there (using a ladder and staying far away) and there were 4. A weeks after seeing the eggs and watching mom sit on them she dissapeared. She hasnt been back for 5 days. The eggs are still there. Kind of greenish blue. What can ido to save them? Do you thinkthey are alive?
ok, so there is this bird house in my backyard.? All week long, I have heard the chatter of baby birds, and saw their parents going in and out allll day long. But I noticed today, the parents were no where to be found, I watched it for a while (boredom) Then I took a closer look at the house, and saw ants alllll over it!!!! (No chatters heard) Then, I tapped on it, to feel for movement (little ants don't mean good things, probably not on bird houses anyways) But, there was a baby bird beneath the house stuck in a trashcan, I guess it jumped out..? I don't know if I should touch it, or try to take care of it. It tried to fly, but it can't really. It's kind of small, with a gray body, and a black head. Should I leave it there? (Well, probably not in the trashcan.. but idk if I should try and take care of it until it can fly) I'm pretty sure I shouldn't touch it, but what do all ya'alls think?
Where is a good place to watch birds in Boracay? I watch birds as a hobby, using binoculars. I have observed birds from our backyard in Ambolong. After having been to Cebu and watched the spectacular gathering of migrant birds at SRP and Jugan, Consolacion, I wonder if there's a similar place in Boracay where birds, either migrant or local, congregate. Thanks.
Suggestions for the right spotting scope? I want to purchase a spotting scope for my Dad. He has a backyard where he watches birds, deer, etc. The longest range he would need is around 200 yards. I'd like to get a fairly good one for a reasonable price. Any recommendations on magnification so he's not disappointed?

Is the male or female cardinal the bright red one? I've been watching these two birds in my backyard for the past few days, i think they're nesting nearby. One is bright red, and the other isn't. Out of curiosity is the male or the female the one that is bright red?
Can anyone tell me what kind of bird this is? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAxbxqvT-v0 the bird in the video above was in my backyard in michigan and i never saw or heard anything like it so i took a video of it cuz i was curious. the bird was black and had like yellow or rainbow patches on his wings it was really cool, any idea of what kind of bird that is with the noise and description?
Should we take down this birds nest in our backyard? Okay, we noticed these birds creating a bird nest in our backyard and we watched them build it and thought about how amazing it was. The fact that they built this nest out of basically spit and dry grass was insane but the nest is located right next to the patio door and now we cant go into our backyard because when we do it becomes a scene from THE BIRDS. I don't want to take it down because i would feel like im messing with nature but its been two weeks and we cant go into our backyard. The worst part is I looked up how long their egg to flying span is and it would seem im going to be without a backyard for the next month. I dont know what to do. Please tell me what would be the best thing to do in this situation. The birds are swallows.
A bright, colorful and friendly pet bird that likes to live in groups? My husband and I would really like to get a few pet birds. We would like some that like to live in groups because its fun to watch them interact with each other and its nice to see the beautiful bright colors in groups. Smaller birds (but not tiny) and tamable (able to handle) pet birds would be ideal. Another catch is, we have a cat who loves to hunt. I would not want to keep them in the house. I would like to have a large enclosure for them outside on the porch or backyard. I am able and very well know how to build a preditor proof cage for outdoors, just indoors we wouldnt have much room for something like that. My MIL keeps her parakeets outside and only brings them in when it gets cooler out (we live in FL, so that's no big deal). Is there anything else besides parakeets that you could suggest that would be ok living outdoors as long as it doesnt get too cold? Advice appreciated. Thanks! Thank you so much! So far I have taken into consideration the species you suggested, and Im looking at lovebirds and lorys more seriously. Im worried about the aggresivness issure and the noise issue, however. I may end up with parakeets just because of that. They are beautiful and friendly also, but I find the colors rather common and plain. If I could find a good source that offered more of the brilliant colors that would be great. I looked up the ringneck parakeets and they are beautiful also. I just wish they came in red!! Ok no lory for me. Its going to be a lovebird (more likely it seems so far) or a parakeet. So between the two, which is hardier, which is friendlier? Which is less expensive? Oh this is too much fun! I cant wait to get my little birdy aviary all set up. Its going to be beautiful with live (non-toxic) plants, a small shallow waterfall feature (for bathing and drinking) and some vines and natural material for chewing and nest building. I also have to figure out how they would prefer to sleep. On perches, or inside a wooden box with a small hole, or both? Will they all sleep together or will they need separate bird houses? Thanks guys! Im so excited now and you gave me a great place to start looking!
Are you into birds? Tell me what's flying around in your backyard!? I love watching birds. Here's some frequent fliers in Concord, Ca. Titmice, Doves, Tanager, BushTits, Towhees, Sparrow, ScrubJays, GoldFinch, HouseFinch and something new I've not yet identified. Name your town and the sites you see in yer yard! Let's Talk Birds...............
Get a wild bird to lay eggs in my birdhouse? I made a wooden birdhouse for the enjoyment of watching baby birds grow. I want to know HOW to get wild birds like cardinals and house finches to lay eggs in the bird house. Are they not laying in it because it has human scent on it? I put one of them in a tangled bush where dozens of house finches always stay, I put the other in an easy to get to spot deep in a big pine tree in my backyard. Any suggestions on where to put if that would help with the egg laying?
Outdoor Wild Bird Feeder for window? Our house is near a forest area and there are many wild birds who live in the trees on our front and back yards as well as the vine that grows around our house. We already have several bird feeders in our backyard and we want to add one to the front at the window of the bedroom. What feeder would be best that can clip onto the house near the window so we can sit and watch the birds. We have seen some with suction cups that allow the feeder to be attached to the window but do these actually stay on? Are there any feeder that you can fasten to bricks but that come out far enough so that people can see the birds and enjoy them from the window?
Outdoor set up for dog during winter month? Before people start beating me up on dogs should be with the pack inside the house... :), I work at home so my dog is with me 24/7. He has access to every single corner of the house other than the roof. He sleeps beside our bed. But he is a big newfie and between staying inside or laying at the fenced in backyard watching the birds, chasing the frogs.....no brainer, I can't keep my screen door closed. Now the weather is fine, but I live in Canada. Winter time is brutal but it does not seem affects him at all. -20C and he is still running around normal at the dog park. So I will expect him (15 mths now) continues wanting to go to the backyard in the winter. He is my first dog. Do I need to get him a dog house or some type of set up or don't bother and just trust that he will come in if he feels cold? Thanks.
Orphaned bird eggs- HELP!? There's a bird house in my backyard that has a nest in it. I found my cat with a dead bird next to the bird house while am hoping its not the mother, believe it is. I'm watching to see if a bird approaches the nest, but if not what do I do with the baby birds? Is there a shelter or group that can take care of them? By the way I'm in Seattle,WA...
Is this bird dead? Will it be? My friend and I found a bird in his backyard. The species of bird we think it is is Wren. We have been watching it for about 20 days. Maybe a little less. Anyway I read online they hatch in about 14-16 days. Could this bird be a late hatch-er? We haven't seen the mother ever since. We were going to try to take care of it if it hatches. But will it hatch? Is it dead? If the mother doesnt come back can we take care of it if it's alive? but the birds were in a nest in a heated area. just becouse we havn't seen the mother doesnt mean shes gone. There are 5 eggs one hatched. 4 didn't. THe mother might still be there because the 5th bird flew away.
Wild baby bird help? (Emergency!)? I found a baby bird in my backyard. It has some feathers and does not look like it can fly. I've been watching through the window for a couple of hours but the parents have not shown up and it has not come close to flying only hopping. I think it fell from the nest because we just had a storm before i found it. I know i probably should have left it alone, but i didn't and now its in a shoe box. There are a million trees in my yard and even if i did find the nest it would be impossible to get him back up there even with a ladder. It is sunday and i can't call a vet, pet store, or wildlife rehabiltator because they are closed. I plan on taking him to the animal welfare on monday, but i have to keep him alive through the night. I don't know what kind of bird it is but it looks like the one in this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJf-IJT_C5k ...only younger (it dosn't have that many featheres) so i don't know what to feed him or if i should at all. HELP PLEASE!
please help about my bird !!? uhmm, hi. i've had parakeets for almost 2 years. first, i had a blue and green bird but then later on, the blue one passed away :/ . so i got a white bird. then after a year, my dad accidentally left the cage door a little open, so my green one ran away -_- T_T. a few weeks ago, i bought another brid. he's bright blue. long time ago, i used to be very 'into' my birds and watched them everyday. and i'm sure that they liked me too. the white one, (my favorite bird so far) has learned to perch on my finger for almost a year. the birds were kept in the garage becuase my mom dislikes the feathers and the smell. later on, my dad said that they'd be better off outside in my backyard. now it is hanging a little higher than my head on the brick wall. whenever i put my finger in the cage and get my white bird ( rex) to go on my finger, it steps away like he is scared. he NEVER really likes to be outside his cage.(i think) . although on internet, it says that birds want to explore outside and lik likes* being out of the cage once in awhile. this may be wrong.. but i used to get him out with a glove and then he would sit on my finger. he's learned to step up everytime is put my finger in front of him. :(((( now, i'm too busy and i don't give my birds barely any attention since they are outside. i really don't know what to do ! i feel really bad for the birds for having such a bad owner - _- ; sometimes i forget to change the water and food. now the birds just fly away from me. and i don't think they like the outside. but i have no choice ! imagine how loud the noises of the cars are bothering them ! that's why i think that they are stressed. i wish i can start all over. but i can't do that. first of all, my birds don't like going out of the cage. please give advices T_T i'm reallyyy ,, i want to give them a happier life. & please give advices how to think about them more and REMBMER to go outside and play with them. thank you so much ^^ and i'm really sorry but i cannot give them away. please another advice. maybe how i can convince my parents ? :/ what are some good facts that can help change my parents' minds ?
Anyone else enjoy having morning coffee in the yard? I like just taking a moment in the morning and standing on the porch, enjoying the animals in the backyard. Bird songs, coming from every direction - not just noise from two speakers as we usually hear. Squirrels running around, burying nuts. The sound of a gentle breeze moving through the trees. It seems oddly relaxing. You can tell pretty much what is going on by watching. No deception, guilt, or other complex emotions that I can see. I live in a generally nondescript suburban area - nothing fancy. Maybe folks with aquariums enjoy the same thing. But this is free! Anyone else do something like this? Thanks all! Keep 'em comin'! :)
Why do u suppose some people r cruel enough 2 cage a bird just 2 look at it - & they don't care? It's in a bird's nature 2 fly far & wide & 2 migrate. They have a drive 2 do so. Why r some people not willing 2 just put out a birdfeeder &/or a birdbath 2 watch birds? Even people in apartments w/out backyards put birdfeeders on their porch - sometimes right on the other side of a window so they can look right thru the window at the birds & enjoy them. Why do u suppose some people don't care about doing something cruel like caging a bird?
How do birds know where to fly? We sit in our backyard and watch hummingbirds feed. When they leave the feeder they have to fly higher than our wall is. How do they know to go above the wall?
Dream : Message from an Anthropormorphic Bird? I was with my grandmother, looking into the neighbors' backyard, over a small fence. The sky darkened as if a storm had arrived. My grandmother said, "Look at all the frogs; this would be perfect for a Wiccan (or maybe she said witch, I'm not sure)." I said, "They aren't frogs; they're toads." The backyard flooded. There were huge toads hopping around. A black crow landed on a toad and pecked it. I wasn't sure if it was eating it or not, but by the facial expression of the toad, it wasn't pleasant. Three small elephants walked toward the fence. One was light pink and the others blue. Their teeth and tusks had been cut off. Both tusk and teeth were cracked and ruined. It looked painful. Then a bird man walked toward me. He had the head of a bird but walked with human legs. I asked him when he became bipedal. He made a motion to his beak, then shaped his body into an "N." I understood it as "I don't know." He confirmed this. Then he spoke to me in falsetto. He said, "You have no idea the power of your thoughts." I said, "I can't stop thinking of bad things." He then loomed over me and said something that I can no longer remember, but it was something similar to before. He really wanted to impress this upon me. After speaking to me, he changed into numerous crows, and when they flew, they left golden tracers shaped like panthers behind them. They flew onto a power line and perched. I understood that though he changed and was unnoticeable in the environment, he was there, watching, always. What does this mean? It was extremely vivid, the colors were amazing.
48 hour bird egg...eating, caring, etc...? So, you may have seen my last question about how i found a bird egg, that i do not know if it it a Robin or a Greckel. yes, i suppose you have, if not, well, then, keep reading. So, i have been incubating this egg for about 48 hours now. I DO know that it is ALIVE and growing. The egg has gotten a bit bigger since i last measured it (the day we found the egg). There were no birds nest around, not up in the short trees we have here...no where! the closest nest in in my backyard, in my BBQ pit, but i have been watching that nest since it was being built. there were 5 eggs the day before they hatched, and about 3 minutes after they all had hatched, i went outside and counted the chicks...and still 5! i know that i didnt miscount the # of eggs, there have only been 5, and no more, no less, since! i have been rotating the egg regularly, and monitoring the size, and heat of the incubator... my question is what i should do to prepair for the hatch. once it hatches, its going to be hungry, right? so what do i feed it? i own 3 birds of my own, but, anyways, should i feed it parakeet fod for the first few "whiles". i wont be keeping it as a pet, i am going to care for it until it opens its eyes, then its straight the ASPCA. here are all my questions- •what should i feed it after it hatches? •BEFORE it hatches, what should i put it in? should i place it in a box, then back on the heating pad? •what should i do to prepare for the hatch? •do i need to find worms? or can i buy them from the fishing section at wal-mart? •how many times do i need to feed it? •what are good signs of health that i should be looking for? •REMEBER, ITS A ROBIN EGG, WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT I SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT THE CHICK DOESNT HAVE? thnkx soooo much! ? btw, i do know that it is alive, i have tested it. and that was a visual account, im not sure that it has gotten bigger. please do not try to mock my intelligence.
what can i feed the squirles in my yard? i have a bird feeder in my backyard and recently i put seeds in it. I went to go check it and the day after i put the seeds in it was gone. i watched outside the next morning and saw that the theives were the gray sqirles in my yard. I want to feed them so that they wont get my bird seeds they are costing me $20 each week!so what hoslhols food can you feed squirles will pecans do
Anyone ever had a bad experience watching "the ring"? VERY REAL EXPERIENCE: The only time I think I actually felt and saw something evil around me was when I showed my older brother "the ring" at 12 something at night which he is totally scarred forever from, since it was his first time seeing it, fyi my brother is a cop in arizona (big guy trains mma blah blah). I first and foremost am not exaggerating or lying and yes its the internet and anyone can make stuff up but I try to always be honest and I would never make up a story like this newayz believe me or not. We were sitting on our familys U couch at 12 something and maybe it was partly our fault for setting it up in a creepy setting because our family has surround sound speakers built in the ceiling and we got a set of 2 huge windows to the right of the couch with the tv in front of the living room. All lights were turned off of course and it was kinda loud in the house and my parents and my sister were in bed already. Well....i'm not even exaggerating one bit when I say this, right on the exact part where the girl is found dead in the closet we hear a pounding on the window "bam bam bam bam" (about that many times) Like LOUD too and my brother jumps clear to my side and smashes me and we both screamed literally holding eachother trying to figure out what the heck was going on. Then we started getting pissed because first thing we thought was our sister was pounding on the window so my brother goes over to her room and shes sound asleep admist this little chaos thats going on. Then my brother says its probably one of your friends and they probably are laughing at how scared we got. The next part I dont seriously know why we did this but we didnt turn on the lights to look into the backyard we just supposed someone tried to scare us because it was right on the part where shes in the closet so I was thinking it was a setup of course. We resumed the movie got sucked into it and I'm not even exaggerating one bit right towards the end when the girl comes out of the tv again it happens right on cue, "bam bam bam bam" like a good four or five hard LOUD bangs, fast too like someones fist on the window. We again go sailing across the couch huddled screaming trying to look outside at the window but we seriously couldnt see anyone and we were both scared out of our minds. We could even feel that something wasnt right it was the most eery feeling i've ever had. While the credit music is blaring through the house which didnt help at all either we go inside my parents room and wake up my dad, keep in mind my brother is a cop and a pretty tough dude lol, my dad wakes up kinda pissed and turns on the porch light outside and we see a bird(dove) fly away like nothing, didnt seem injured or anything. Then we look at the door closest to where we were and I'm not even kidding the door was like half an inch open, we dont know if the bird hit the door at sometime and opened it from it banging but it was creaked open and holy crap me and my brother looked at eachother like what the hell is going on. This was his first time watching this and anytime someone even says the ring he says shutup he got scared that bad. I had seen it like 3 times before but I still will never forget that feeling that night. We talked a lot about it afterwords and this is what seems so unreal. First of all when does a bird ever hit a window at night?? Then why would a bird REPEATEDLY hit the window after its first initial hit. Then how it hit at the exact probably two scariest parts of the movie where the girl is dead in the closet and where she comes out of the tv?? I'm sorry but I will never say that's just luck I truly believe either the bird was possessed or some kind of evil was present. Even in the movie it talks about the horses getting kinda possessed and killing themselves off cliffs and stuff so I dunno. Well thats my experience I was wondering if anyone could relate somehow. it wasnt one of my friends it was the bird because the pounding was higher than an average person could reach and you guys just dont relate because you didnt experience it, I guess i'm alone on this
Recently we started letting our kitten outside in our backyard...and now...? Jade is approximately 8 months old. We found her when she was about five weeks (we think) and have raised her indoors ever since. We moved recently however and began letting her outside in our backyard as it is fenced in and her curiosity was growing. She has done great back there. She just sits and watches the birds and insects, she sun bathes and plays with our daughter. The problem is that now she seems less "human friendly." She doesnt want to be held very much, in fact she fusses a lot when she's picked up now. She wont play with our daughter inside very much. I've become very concerned about this; I dont want to have a cat that doesnt like her own humans. Have we made a mistake letting her out? Many responses are really great, but here's some additional info: my daughter is 8, and Jade is pretty attached to her; way more than to any adult. we have more toys than we know what to do with, and we do rotate and put some away as recommended. Jade has been "fixed" for some time now as she went into early heat at 4 months. And we have a privacy fence, and really she's never even attempted. Its just her attitude that I'm concerned about. She too has always been "in charge" it just seems to have gotten more prominent since she began visiting the outdoors. Thanks for all the responses!
How long before Hummingbirds will start coming to my new feeder? I just bought a hummingbird feeder for my backyard. I put it by some hummingbird flowers...and filled it with my homemade nectar. I've been watching it for about an hour/ 45 min....how long until the birds find it? Oh the nectar is clear, and so is the saucer shaped feeder...the only thing that is red is the flowers...should I add more red by painting it? Or should I just wait longer?
Very odd dream about a cat killing a bird.? So last night i had this dream that i just can't get out of my head. First of all, one of my friends, (except i never saw him before I had this dream), had this shoebox with a bird in it. I believe it was dead but i remember him squeezing it and popping its head off. I proceeded to chew him out for this act and then headed into my backyard where my cat was hunting a bird. My cat normally kills small animals and brings them home for us lol so this was no surprise for me. Anyways, he finally caught it and I watched him shake it and let it go. The bird then tried to fly away but one of its wings was broken. So my cat caught it again, shook it, then pressed its paw on the bird's neck, broke it, and killed the bird. I woke up extremely sad and disturbed by this (I do not enjoy seeing animals die or being abused however i do understand that cats have an instinct to hunt and kill). If anyone knows what this means that would be awesome. Thanks!
Can you tell me the topic sentence of this paragraph? I have spent the last month exploring my backyard. I have discovered an entire ecosystem right under my nose. A variety of birds, ranging from the plain simplicity of the lowly swallow to the neon intensity of the bluebird, take refuge in the trees. My mother loves to watch birds. Spiders and earthworms skitter and squirm over the grass and through the earth. Field mice run from the barn cats. Last year, one of the barn cats had kittens. Wildflowers show off their bright colors for the honey bees. My friend is so afraid of getting stung by bees she won’t sit down outside. I never realized how much busy life was out there until I looked.
How can I increase the local rabbit population? Some people like to feed the birds, some people like to feed squirrels. I've got a small population of suburban wild rabbits. I think they're cute and like watching them nibble on the grass and hop about. They seem to be pretty innocuous. What do they like to eat, how can I create a rabbit sanctuary in my backyard? Sure, you can shoot some of 'em if you'd like. I just want to have happy little rabbits hopping about.
My grandson Peter is constantly playing outside the gate, what should I do? We live in a rural area, and it's somewhat wild. I made an enclosure, and there is an ample space on the backyard for Peter to play in, but he is constantly going outside, to the pond in the meadow, where he watches the duck and even made friends with a wild singing bird. I am happy that he loves animals, but people saw a wolf prowling around, and I do not want to take any chances. What should I do, how can I keep Peter in?
These cats are driving me INSANE...!!? (No, I will NOT act violently towards them or bring them to the pound to be killed - I love animals, but I have a right to be annoyed.) (No need to get angry at me for rambling. It's your own fault if you choose to read this, not mine.) These cats. They aren't strays. Their owners let them run loose. There are probably about twenty of them on my street alone. They are absolutely EVERYWHERE. I had my tent out in my *fenced-in* backyard because I was sleeping in it for a few nights, just for fun. I like sleeping outdoors once in a while. Well, guess what? Those cats peed all over it. All. Over. It. We feed the birds. What do the cats do? Sit near the feeder and wait for the birds to land. Hunting them. Feeding the birds is supposed to be an enjoyable experience for bird-watchers, not a trap. My cat, Smokey, is allowed to hang around in the backyard. He's an older cat and doesn't hunt or try to jump over the fence; he just likes to eat grass. But the cats like to jump the fence and harass him and try to get him into fights. Nearly every morning at about 3 AM, they fight under my window. A bunch of terrible, awful sounds: "YARRAWWWLLLLLLLLWARRRYARRRRR!!!" It goes on for a long time. And once I wake up, my mind starts going, and I have a hard time getting back to sleep. I have an air conditioner and a fan going; it helps block out the noise a little, but not completely. I refuse to wear earplugs. I'm a little funny about not being able to hear the goings-on in my house, y'know? I've tried covering my ears with stuff, but it just gets me nervous and I can't get to sleep at all. They destroyed my grandmother's garden. They turned it into a litterbox. She has arthritis really bad and can't keep fixing it. Poop, poop, everywhere. Torn-up plants and flowers wrecked/burned by pee. She stopped feeding the birds because of the cats that kept killing the ground-feeders. And she LOVED feeding the birds! She even had binoculars and a bird-watching book and everything... I've opened up the door before and they've tried to get into my house. One of them actually DID, and promptly started a fight with Smokey (the grass-eating cat...), who was sitting by the door. Started a fight with my cat...in--my--house. I'm not sure I'm even asking a question... I'm really just venting, but if anyone somehow has advice, that'd be fantastic. I have no idea what to do except move, but can't afford it right now, and I'm sure there'll be just as many loose cats in whatever neighborhood I end up in. I'm almost tempted to get a law passed about letting cats run loose in neighborhoods. I'm definitely not the only one who's fed up with it. Don't even joke around and tell me to get a gun or talk about how you shot cats. I don't want to hear it. I love cats. I just don't like what these ones are doing. I'd talk to the neighbors, but I have no idea who owns which cat... I don't really talk to them. Most of them are either insane or don't speak a word of English. It's a really bizarre neighborhood. I think most of them are neutered and spayed; a few aren't, though. A spray bottle? I doubt I could get close enough to them to do that... I've tried to approach them before, but only one (who's currently pregnant; check my other question) ever lets me... "If he's not outside, these annoying cats will have no reason to congregate in your backyard." He has nothing to do with it, they congregate in my backyard no matter what...the noises outside my window don't have to do with Smokey, either; he goes out a couple times a day for about ten minutes or so.
What should I do about the bird in my backyard!?!? These two robins have been in freaking out in my backyard at my dogs. I wasn't sure what they were yelling so loud about but then I saw a little bird on the ground. I thought it was a bird that they had attacked so I touched it lightly with a twig while the other birds were flipping. It opened it's mouth at me so, I say it was alive lol. My dogs continued to go over to the bird, but I kept on yelling for them to get away and then made them go inside. I figured the two birds are the parents of this little one but they are robins and this one is grey, but it may have not gotten its colours yet. Anyway the parents are just chirping at it while it watches them and even when I went inside they are not going near it....will they go to it? or are they not going to touch it now that i have with a twig or that my dogs may have? I don't want to take it inside because I know that they are pretty hard to stay alive and I have an 11 month old to keep an eye on. I know this is long and I am really thankful for your help!! Thanks, Steph by the way, I wrote this under the wrong account. sorry about that! but if you answer this question seriously, I will answer your question on my account. I think its under Stephie. okay thankss!
fun things to do outside? i Don't live by my friends, park, beach, no trails, or a safe place to ride bike/walk because the cars go by really fast. I have woods in my backyard, but I dont want soething stupid like "bird watching" so PLEASE help, and please give a list :)
Does anyone know what bird this, and if it needs help? There's a strange bird that has been coming to my backyard and perched on the wall pretty much every day. I was out in my backyard when my dog started barking at one that was running around on the ground. I just expected it to fly away, but it didn't, so I got my dog away from the bush it was hiding in. I have no idea what this bird is, but here is a description: It is small, about the size of an adult hand, and is mostly medium brown. It has a white chest with a horizontal black stripe across it, and a black ring around it's neck. It has very large eyes that have an orange ring around them, and white above the eyes and beak. It runs fast, too. It makes the same call every time, right outside our window, and whenever one makes the sound, another one calls back (nearly every time). It looks a tiny bit like a mockingbird, but I just don't know what it is. I live in the Mojave desert (Antelope Valley) California. The bird can't seem to fly, it keeps trying to perch on the wall like it's "buddy" but can't, and it couldn't fly away when my dog went after it, so I think something is wrong. Also, my kids were able to get close enough to touch it (although they didn't) without it being able to get away. It seems to be blind, too (but I'm no bird expert) it just keeps freaking out and running, then bumping right into the wall with it's beak (very pitiful to watch). Does anyone know what bird this is, and if it needs help? Thanks!
Can black hawks (bird) kill or take my cat? My cat has always been watching the black hawks that fly over our backyard and they seem to watch her also. All of a sudden, my cat has gone missing and I was wondering if it's possible that black hawks could've picked up my declawed cat or something. My cat is chipped.
What exactly is birdwatching? Would it count if I just hung up a feeder in my backyard and looked at birds through binoculars? Also, how can I start bird watching? What are some beginner tips, is it fun? What do you do in bird watching? How can I find yellow or other birds with cool colors. also do you need to keep like a journal and everything or can it just be a relaxing hobby where you just have a book to identify them and binoculars, does that count?
